The first-ever observed hybrid may be a sign the predators are adapting to climate change.
The mating of the local Australian black-tip shark with its global counterpart, the common black-tip, was an unprecedented discovery with implications for the entire shark world.
Kieran Mulvaney (author of the Great White Bear: A Natural and Unnatural History of the Polar Bear), on what he thinks is so great about polar bears.
“The first time we saw a good healthy polar bear off the Russian Arctic, it seemed to be swaggering. Its shoulders were rolling as if it were a prizefighter. And one of the crew on the icebreaker said to me, “Yeeeeeah, look at him. He owns the ice.” They have an air about them that is really unique to these top-of-the-food-chain carnivores.”

Incredible New Astrophotograph of the Small Magellanic Cloud
A new portrait of the Small Magellanic Cloud reveals our galactic neighbor in unprecedented detail. The picture, taken in infrared light by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, is helping astronomers better understand the life cycle of dust in the galaxy.
Understanding where dust comes from, how it forms bodies such as planets, and how it gets dispersed in the spaces between objects can result in new insights into galaxy formation. And the Small Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy close to the Milky Way, is an analog for some of the tiny galaxies that first populated the universe.
